13 held for the chaos and mass gathering at Mumbai’s Bandra

The police identified and arrested 13 individuals for triggering chaos at the Bandra railway station in Mumbai, on Tuesday evening. The arrested individuals have circulated false information on the movement of long-distance trains.

The arrested individuals include a journalist from a news channel, nine migrant workers, one political activist, and two other men from Kamothe. On Tuesday evening, more than 1,500 migrant workers gathered outside Mumbai’s Bandra railway station, breaking the nationwide lockdown rule laid by the Prime Minister. The migrant workers gathered in large numbers and demanded to be sent back to their respective native places in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and Jharkhand. Police dispersed the assembled migrant workers with lathi charge.

Mumbai police identified 13 individuals from the gathering and filed FIRs against them for triggering chaos and spreading false information. Vinay Dubey, a political worker, was picked up from his residence in Airoli and arrested early on Wednesday. Rahul Kulkarni, a journalist from ABP Majha, was also arrested. The two had instigated the migrants to gather at the Bandra railway station to board trains to their native towns. Political activist Vinay Dubey had shared videos on social media urging the migrant workers to reach Kurla’s Lokmanya Tilak Terminus and also said that he would help them reach their native towns. He also provoked the migrant workers to protest against the ruling government for not arranging transportation facilities and putting the migrant workers to suffer during the lockdown period.

Journalist Rahul Kulkarni was held at Osmanabad. The district superintendent of police Raj Roshan stated that the journalist aired a fake news report on Tuesday, claiming that the Indian railways had decided to run Jansadharan special trains to help the migrant worker reach their hometowns. The Bandra police identified nine migrant workers who were causing chaos at the gathering through CCTV footage. The police eventually arrested the migrants.

The police produced the political activist Vinay Dubey before the court and remanded police custody till April 21. DCP Abhishek Trimukhe stated that the journalist, along with the nine migrant workers, would be taken to court on Thursday.
