Kerala Tourism Minister K Surendran has opened up on the controversy surrounding promoting a beef recipe on Twitter on Makar Sankranti. He said that there is no religion linked with recipe and even pork pictures are also promoted on the website.

The department of Kerala Tourism courted a controversy by sharing a picture of beep recipe on its Twitter handle. It also wrote, “Tender chunks of beef, slow-roasted with aromatic spices, coconut pieces, and curry leaves. A recipe for the most classic dish, Beef Ularthiyathu, the stuff of legends, from the land of spices, Kerala:”

This tweet of Kerala Tourism sparked a big debate on social media with the right wing activists calling it a religious discrimination. The said that the government is intentionally hurting the sentiments of Hindus. They also challenged to post pork recipe picture. An advocate named Prashanth Patel Umarav (@ippatel) replied, “Try promoting Pork also. you will get a taste of your medicine. Shameless!”

When the Kerala Government sensed the growing outburst, Tourism Minister K Surendran held a press meet to clear the air surrounding beef recipe. “In Kerala no one is linking food with religion. Govt does not have any interest in hurting religious belief of anyone. Giving communal colour to this is condemnable, the ANI quoted him as saying.

Meanwhile, the Kerala Tourism Minister also responded to the right wing people, who asked him to dare to promote pork recipe on Twitter. K Surendran added, “Those who’re trying to find communalism in all this, are creating a controversy by saying ‘put pork pictures’. Many dishes, including pork pictures, are already on the website, they might not have seen.”
