Congress claims majority in Manipur nine MLAs shift allegiance

Congress has asked an audience with the Governor of Manipur after 9 MLA’s from the N Biren Singh government have shifted their alliance to Congress pushing the BJP led government to a minority in the state. Congress is planning to pass a vote of no confidence against the speaker of the house and the ruling government as they no longer have the majority. Though it is highly unlikely that Congress will stake a direct claim to form the government. Congress Spokesperson has also informed that 12 MLA’s has filed complaints against the speaker and sent a notice to the Manipur Legislative Assembly requesting them to remove him from authority. He also added that their government was facing issues before this, as they had an overdraft of more than ₹250 crores under this government.

Those who withdrew included Deputy Chief Minister Y JoyKumar Singh along with three other Ministers of the State. Another three MLAs from BJP, one from All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) and one Independent candidate withdrew from the coalition. This situation has arisen just before the Rajya Sabha elections for the one Manipur seat which were going to be held on 19 June. BJP has nominated Leisemba Sanajaoba, the king of Manipur, while the Congress nominee is T Mangi Babu. If Congress is to receive the green light, they declared former Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh would assume power, and it will be a ‘new sunrise for Manipur’. BJP has not yet responded to the situation and is observing the situation; no legal action has been taken against the MLA’s by the party. Last year members from the Congress had shifted alliance and went on to join the BJP. Congress now claims they have 31 MLA’s in the 60 member house hence a majority to gain control over the state, a final hearing on the matter will be held on 22 June.
