Gangster-turned-politician Atiq Ahmed’s son Asad and his aide Ghulam, who were accused of Umesh Pal’s murder, were killed in an encounter by the Uttar Pradesh Special Task Force (STF) in Jhansi on April 13, 2023.
“Asad and Ghulam were wanted in the Umesh Pal murder case of Prayagraj and were carrying a reward of ₹5 lakh each. They were killed in an encounter with the U.P. STF team. The U.P. STF team was led by Deputy SP Navendu and Vimal. Sophisticated foreign-made weapons were recovered from the accused. Further details are awaited,” said Special Additional Director General Prasahant Kumar
Umesh Pal, a key witness in the 2005 murder case of BSP MLA Raju Pal, and his two police security guards were shot dead outside his home in Prayagraj on February 24 this year. Pal’s wife Jaya Pal had lodged a complaint against Atiq Ahmad, his brother Ashraf, Asad, Ghulam and others on February 25.
Atiq Ahmed and his brother were produced before a court on April 13, in connection with the murder case. They were presented in the court of Chief Judicial Magistrate Dinesh Gautam around 11:10 a.m. amid security deployment. However, Umesh Pal’s mother and wife reacted to the reports of the encounter of Asad and Ghulam and said, “Justice served”.
After the encounter of former MP Atiq Ahmed’s son Asad and his aide, CM Yogi Adityanath took a meeting on law and order. CM Yogi praised UP STF as well as DGP, Special DG law and order and the entire team. Sanjay Prasad, Principal Secretary Home informed the CM about the encounter. Union Minister Gen V K Singh congratulated the police and said, “Action will be taken if somebody flees and tries to run away from the law. If action was taken in Jhansi, I’d like to congratulate the Police. If people against whom cases were registered, those who were trying to run away from the law and indulged in actions that led to Police firing and died during that, it happens in Police action.”
