The development comes only a few hours after the Supreme Court dismissed the curative petition of Nirbhaya rape and murder convict Pawan Gupta.
The Union Home Ministry has received Pawan Kumar Gupta’s plea for mercy, one of four accused in the 2012 Nirbhaya gang rape and murder case facing the gallows, officials said Monday.
The lawyer has said as he filed the plea after obtaining information that Gupta’s curative petition had been rejected by the Supreme Court.
The ministry will forward the petition for consideration and decision to President Ram Nath Kovind.
A 23 years old woman who has come to be known as ‘ Nirbhaya ‘ (fearless) was gang-raped and savagely attacked On 16 December 2012 in a moving bus in South Delhi.
Days later, on 29 December, she succumbed to injury, She was admitted to Mount Elizabeth Hospital, Singapore, for better medical care.
Justice N V Ramana has said no case is set out to re-examine the conviction and the convict’s punishment. Pawan, 25, was the last death-row prisoner in the case to transfer his healing plea to the SC, the maximum legal remedy for an individual.
With his petition rejected as curative, Now, Pawan will file a plea for mercy before President Ram Nath Kovind. The three other convicts ‘ pleas for mercy have already been denied.
The President has already denied Mukesh, Vinay and Akshay’s pleas for mercy. Whilst Ram Singh committed suicide in prison. After his term, the juvenile was released from custody.
