Omar Abdullah counters Derek O’Brien on his views on new Parliament building

Former Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, National Conference leader Omar Abdullah expressed his difference of opinion with Derek O’Brien’s views on the new Parliament building, saying looks “pretty damn impressive”.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is all set to inaugurate the new Parliament building tomorrow. Over 20 opposition parties decided to boycott the event and National Conference led by Omar Abdullah is one among them. The former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister retweeted the video of the building on Friday and said it was a welcome addition and looks pretty damn impressive.

Omar Abdullah tweeted, “Setting aside the brouhaha about the inauguration for a moment, this building is a welcome addition. The old Parliament House has served us well but as someone who has worked there for a few years, a lot of us often spoke amongst ourselves about the need for a new & improved parliament building. Better late than never is all I’ll say & this one looks pretty damn impressive.”

In reply, Derek O’Brien tweeted his column published in Indian Express and slammed the BJP government for making a mockery of Parliament. The TMC leader tweeted, “Beyond the the look, the feel and the facilities in the #NewParliamentBuilding  A serious danger here. Since 2014 the Modi government has made a MOCKERY OF PARLIAMENTARY PROCESS on several occasions.”

Omar Abdullah responded to Derek O’Brien and reminded him of the parliamentary process before the bifurcation of Jammu and Kashmir. The NC leader said that he is not talking about usage of the building, but the country deserved a new parliament building.

Omar Abdullah replied, “That’s about the usage of the building & the way parliamentary process has been blown to smithereens Derek. Who would know that better than us in J&K? How long did it take Parliament to bifurcate us, disempower us & humiliate us & what discussion was there before the changes were enacted? My limited point is about the fact that the country deserved a new parliament building, nothing more & nothing less.”
