The incident of the death of a father and son in Tuticorin, Tamil Nau has made furious. The death in police custody of the father and son after being arrested on Friday for opening their mobile shop for longer than the curfew time has led to anger across the nation. Activists have come out and asked the public to address this issue in the same way people were protesting for George Floyd’s death.
The family members of the deceased- Jayaraj and his son Beniks have refused to receive the bodies of the victims because the state refuses to charge the policemen for murder. They say the body has several bruises even there are injuries to the rectum and chest hair being removed. They claim that the two were brutally tortured and ask for murder charges against the policemen involved.
The FIR from Police says that they suffered those injuries because they were rolled on the ground, which seems absurd. Beniks complained of chest pain and died in the hospital while his father Jayaraj complained about fever and was shifted to the hospital were also passed away. The police chief of Tuticorin Arun Balagopalan told the press they would be conducting an investigation on the issue and come up with the results. Celebrities all across the nation have taken to social media to raise their voice and concern for the family of the deceased and against police brutality.
This event has led to the suspension of four police officers, including two sub-inspectors, there was a massive protest in Tuticorin where all shops were closed in the district. This has become a political issue too; Chief Minister EK Palaniswami, who controls the police administration, gave his condolences to the family but remained silent on the police’s subject of torture. He announced a compensation of Rs 20 lakh as and a job for the family. Madurai bench of the Madras High Court has taken up the case and asked a complete post-mortem report which will be filmed. DMK targeted the AIADMK government for allowing the police to take the matter into their own hands and misusing the power given to them. They said it was a tragedy when protectors become oppressors and offered Rs 25 lakh to the family.
