Mani Ratnam’s Ponniyin Selvan 2 (PS 2) has made fantastic
collection at the Tamil Nadu box office on the first day and become the second biggest
Kollywood opener of 2023 in the state after Thunivu.
The success of Ponniyin Selvan 1 had a create a lot of hype
and expectations from its sequel. Adding to the curiosity are its promos, which
soared its craze sky high. The distributors, who shelled out a record sum on
its theatrical rights, booked a large number of cinema halls in a bid to cash
on the hype of the movie, which registered a decent advance booking for its
opening day.
The Mani Ratnam-directed period drama registered 100%
occupancy in most of the cinema halls across Tamil Nadu in the morning shows. With
the movie getting positive response, the word of mouth boosted its business in
the afternoon and evening shows on its opening day. Ponniyan Selvan 2 has
collected Rs 21.37 crore gross at the TN box office on the first day.
Kollywood trade analyst Manobala Vijayabalan tweeted, “#PonniyinSelvan2
mints ₹21.37 cr at the TN Box Office on the opening day. With positive WoM, the
film is expected to GROW over the weekend. #PS2 Good opening day for
#PonniyinSelvan2 at the TN BO. Movie takes SECOND best opening of the year in
the state by BEATING #Varisu. #Thunivu still holds the FIRST place for 2023.”
However, Ponniyin Selvan 2 has taken good start in other parts
of India collected Rs 6.63 crore gross at the box office in those areas, taking
its first day collection to Rs 28 crore gross in India. But the movie has
failed to beat the record of Ponniyin Selvan 1, which scored Rs 37.25 crore
gross in India on its opening day.
