Shaakuntalam starring Samantha and Dev Mohan has received mixed reviews and ratings from film critics, as director Gunasekhar’s efforts have failed to impress them.
Shaakuntalam story: The film is an adaptation of Kalidasa’s Abhignana Shaakuntalam. It is an epic love story of Shakuntala (Samantha) and Dushyant (Dev Mohan). It is about how Shaakuntala ends up in Kanva Maharshi’s ashram, how Dushyant falls for her and does Gandharva’s marriage and the drama that follows until it reaches a happy ending with the reunion.
Analysis: Shaakuntalam is a mildly engaging drama that keeps you glued to the screen here and there. Gunasekhar has tried to commercialise the epic love story with a few action sequences. His treatment of the subject is not upto the mark, as the film runs on a sluggish pace in both the first and the second half. It could have been a lot better, say the film critics.
All the actors have delivered their, but, Samantha, Dev Mohan and Allu Arha’s performances are highlights of Shaakuntalam. Music and picturisation are the big attractions on the technical front, but Tacky VFX is a major letdown and the 3D, which is mostly dark, ruins the experience, add the critics.
Here are some reviews and ratings of Shaakuntalam shared by film critics on Twitter:
#Shaakunthalam needs so much of your patience. Some scenes were good. #Samantha effors are appreciable and #DevMohan is good. #AlluArha is Fabulous. But on the whole of making it’s a bore fest.
Shaakuntalam #Shaakuntalam could’ve been a lot more. Falls short of leaving a lasting impact and barley manages to work in places, despite #Samantha’s earnest efforts. Dev Mohan is good too. Tacky VFX is a major letdown and the 3D, which is mostly dark, ruins the experience. #Shaakuntalam – @Samanthaprabhu2 is quite good, especially in the King’s courtroom scene. The emotional breakdown. Quite a moment. #AlluArha makes a cute debut. Effortlessly mouths her lines with confidence 👌s

#Shaakuntalam required much better writing of its characters & the story, and certainly better technical finesse. Barring a couple of segments, I found it boring & disappointing

Gunasekhar’s underwhelming #Shaakuntalam needed more cinematic vision to be the epic it wants to be… Samantha has a lovely, fragile screen presence, but oddly, Shakuntala seems to register the least in her own story

#Shaakuntalam Bad 1st Half!Low grade VFX makes us feel like we are watching a cartoon mixed with reality. War scenes feel like a spoof and the drama is also mostly flat. Music is decent. Need a very big 2nd half! #Shaakuntalam A Poor Mythological Drama with awful VFX and a boring drama! No real positives to talk about in this film apart from decent music and a few okayish scenes. War sequences are comical. Narration is slow and boring with cartoonish visuals. Disaster! Rating: 1.5/5 Dialogues are also a huge minus for the film. It feels like almost every dialogue tries to be poetic but it becomes irritating and impact-less.
