UP BJP Chief Ditches Coronavirus Candles, Shoots in the Air

Tiwari can be seen in the video carrying a revolver, which allegedly belonged to her husband Om Prakash, and shooting in the air cluelessly.

As the country united on Sunday to respond to the call from Prime Minister Narendra Modi to light up lamps, candles, and torches at 9 pm, a local head of BJP Mahila Party in Uttar Pradesh was shooting from a revolver gun in the air to “combat” the coronavirus.

The incident took center stage after Balrampur BJP member Manju Tiwari filmed this on her Facebook page and posted it to her. The video soon went viral, attracting strong criticism from users of social media who requested strong action towards her.

Celebratory shooting is illegal in Uttar Pradesh and is restricted by law.

Tiwari can be seen in the video carrying a revolver, which allegedly belongs to her husband Om Prakash, and shooting in the air aimlessly. Tiwari first lit the lamps on her house’s terrace and then opened fire while her husband was allegedly shooting the video.

While the video elicited extreme flak from all directions, no action against Tiwari has yet been taken.

The BJP leader posted the video with the caption on Facebook that said, “Deep Jalane Ke Baad, Coronavirus bhagate hue (By lighting lamps, sending away coronavirus)”

Accordance to section 286 of the IPC and 30 of the Arms Act, police have registered a case against Tiwari. “A video has gone viral on social media where an incident has been seen in which Manju Tiwari can be seen the shooting. A case has been reported under relevant rules at the police station in Kotwali Nagar and further investigation is being carried out,” Arvind Tiwari, Additional SP.
